Our medical center was established in 1963 on 22 acres of land donated by A. H. Meadows, the son of the first physician in Toombs County, John M. Meadows, MD. That was only the beginning…

1963 As the Dr. John M. Meadows Memorial Hospital, we admitted our first patient September 18, 1963.
1976 Our first expansion project added a third floor with an eight-bed ICU, bringing our total number of beds up to 91.
1978 We established behavioral health services with an outpatient mental health center and inpatient alcohol and drug abuse center built on campus.
1980 To provide space for meetings and educational programs, we constructed a multipurpose building on campus.
1984 Our continued growth added 34 medical/surgical beds and expanded all support services including pharmacy, radiology, laboratory, emergency, operating room, medical records and nutrition services.
1988 Answering the need for outpatient surgical services, we opened our ambulatory surgery center near the operating room. We admitted our first patient to our new 35-bed Meadows Nursing Center June 9, 1988.
1992 We performed our first MRI using a mobile unit October 19, 1992.
1993 Employees and community members began enjoying our new half-mile fitness trail in June.
1994 Through a corporate reorganization, we officially changed the name of our hospital to Meadows Regional Medical Center on July 1, 1994. We performed our first lithotripsy using a mobile unit February 8, 1994. Our R.T. Stanley, Sr. Health Center opened in Lyons.
1995 We established Treutlen Medical Center in Soperton.
1996 Our hospital, long-term care center and laboratory were awarded JCAHO accreditation.
1997 We established the John W. McArthur Health Center in Mt. Vernon.
The Lucy Pierson Medical Office Building opened on our campus, creating office space for eight physicians.
1998 Our obstetrics renovations created five new labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum (LDRP) suites.
1999 We broke ground on a 20,000 square-foot renovation on October 19, 1999. This added:
  • Eight ambulatory surgery beds
  • Three surgical suites
  • Two endoscopy suites
  • One cystoscopy suite

And increased space for:
  • Post anesthesia recovery
  • Rehabilitation
  • Cardiopulmonary care
  • Cafeteria
  • Radiology
  • Admitting area
  • Emergency department
1999 We were named a Top 100 Regional Hospital by HCIA-Sachs.
2000 In June, we performed our first procedure in our new, two-bed sleep lab.

We installed our first CT scanner in July.
2001 Specialists performed the first procedure in our new cardiac catheterization laboratory November 7, 2001.
2002 We received the Georgia Alliance of Community Hospitals Small Hospital of the Year award.

We installed a new nuclear camera, launched our urodynamics program, and reinstated our EEG program.

Renovations began on our third floor patient rooms and nurses’ station.
2003 We renovated our medical office building to house two new open and closed MRI units.

Our progressive care unit opened for patients who need monitoring without intensive care.

Our radiology department went completely digital with the installation and validation of our picture archiving and communication system (PACS).
2005 We were named to the list of Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals.
2006 We were named to the list of Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals – again!
2008 We were named to the list of Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals for a third time!
2009 We were part of the inaugural group of hospitals to earn the HealthGrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award.
2009 We broke ground on our new state-of-the-art medical center August 26.
